MADIS · Data Anonymization Platform (MDAP)
Production data in test? Never again.
MDAP is a data anonymization platform built for financial institutions. It automatically discovers and anonymizes personal data (PII) across Oracle, MS SQL, and Sybase databases — so test environments can be used safely and the whole process stays auditable.
- 97 TB
- of production data anonymized in a single run for a tier-1 bank
- 60 hrs
- one maintenance window — start to finish, across the entire test estate
- 33,490
- PII columns automatically identified across 9,105 tables
The challenge
The regulator's expectation is clear. Hungary's central bank, the MNB, sets out the requirement directly in recommendation 8/2020, section 4.4.5.
“An institution shall not use production data in its development and test environments, or only after complete anonymization.”
Option 1 — Extend production-grade controls
Apply the same access controls and safeguards used in production across the entire test infrastructure.
Verdict: costly, complex, and heavy to operate — typically far more expensive in a complex banking environment.
Option 2 — MDAP: Anonymize the data itself
Remove the sensitive data before it ever reaches a test environment, rather than trying to lock the environment down around it.
Verdict: a one-time implementation with measurable, auditable compliance.
The solution
One platform for the safe use of production data. MDAP covers the entire anonymization lifecycle — from automatic discovery of PII fields, through database-level transformation, to mocking the integrations that would otherwise reach into the test environment.
Profiler
Metadata- and content-based PII discovery, with a verifiable results table and an approval checkpoint before anything runs.
- Maintained metadata store
- Excludable schemas & tables
- One field, one data type
Anonymizer
Central orchestration plus target-database task generation. Runs in parallel, offline, with full logging.
- Dedicated MDAP user & database
- Authentication maintenance
- CSV / XLS file import support
Service
WCF / REST mock endpoints and a master-data recorder, so test-environment integrations never reach outside the closed system.
- Mocked reporting calls
- Inbound data serving
- Master-data recorder module
Data sources
Designed for a heterogeneous banking environment. MDAP provides one orchestration layer across the database platforms most common in banking. A dedicated MDAP user accesses each target database, and every run is fully logged.
- Oracle Database
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Sybase Adaptive Server
- CSV / XLS file import
A central database coordinates the target databases, with support for multiple instances and multiple databases across legacy banking environments — plus standalone anonymization of CSV and XLS files used to move production slices into individual test databases.
Proven reference — major domestic bank. A tier-1 financial institution anonymized its entire test environment — across Oracle, MS SQL, and Sybase — inside a single 60-hour maintenance window.
