Patient Companion App for Cataract Surgery

A patient companion app that prepares people for cataract surgery

MADIS developers and testers help build a mobile app and clinic admin portal that guide patients before and after surgery – with appointments, checklists and reminders in one place.

Summary: Cataract patients are often older and receive their preparation instructions on paper or by link. For a German medical technology company, MADIS helps develop a mobile app and an admin portal that let clinics share checklists, reminders and information with patients, help patients prepare for and recover from surgery, and give clinics feedback on patient satisfaction.

The client

The client is a German medical technology company that produces devices for cataract surgery and supports them with software. With this project it wanted to help not only clinicians, but also patients throughout their treatment.

The challenge

Before cataract surgery, patients have to follow several steps – appointments, preparations and, afterwards, regular use of eye drops. Until now this information was sent on paper or as separate links, which made it hard for patients to keep track and for clinics to follow up.

There was no comparable product on the market to learn from, so the app had to be developed step by step while the business side refined what clinics actually needed.

  • A new kind of product: no existing example to follow, with a scope that kept evolving.
  • An older target group: cataract patients are typically 60–65 or older, so the app had to be simple to use.
  • Many clinics: each clinic needs its own content, settings and statistics.

Our approach

Patient mobile app

Patients can book appointments, follow the checklists their clinic sets for them before and after surgery, and receive reminders – for example for eye drops, which are essential to a good recovery.

Clinic admin portal

Clinics manage notifications, checklists, information pages and articles, add patients, and see usage statistics and satisfaction feedback.

Onboarding and integration

Patients join their clinic using a clinic code, an emailed link or – in development – a QR code. The app is integrated with the client’s health data platform.

Quality through test automation

MADIS testers wrote, ran and maintained automated tests in the admin team, alongside development, in an agile Scrum setup.

The solution

The solution consists of a patient app for cataract surgery, a second app for refractive (laser) eye surgery under development, and an admin portal for clinics. Together they bring all information and communication between clinic and patient into one place, which clinics can monitor.

Technologies: Angular · Ionic · TypeScript

Results

  • Better patient experience: patients have appointments, checklists and reminders in one app instead of paper and separate links.
  • Less work for clinic staff: information and reminders are managed centrally.
  • Data for improvement: usage statistics and satisfaction surveys help clinics improve their service continuously.
  • Positive reception: early feedback from pilot clinics has been positive.
