Connecting diagnostic devices and clinical records in one ophthalmic data management solution

MADIS contributes to the long-term development of a scalable data management system that links eye-care diagnostic devices with clinics’ electronic health records.

Summary

Eye-care specialists work with many diagnostic devices and a separate electronic health record (EHR). For a German medical technology company, MADIS helps develop a scalable ophthalmic data management solution that connects the two, gives clinicians access to patients’ earlier examinations and supports a fully paperless workflow.

The client

The client is a German medical technology company that develops diagnostic and surgical devices for ophthalmology, along with the software ecosystem around them.

The challenge

Ophthalmology clinics generate large volumes of examination data on different diagnostic instruments, while patient records live in the clinic’s EHR. Without a link between them, staff re-enter patient details, results are scattered across devices, and earlier findings are hard to compare with new ones.

The client needed to secure the long-term development of its data management system, so that it can serve both smaller practices and large hospital groups, and work either on-premises or as part of the company’s wider digital medical ecosystem.

Our approach

Connecting devices and records

The system creates the connection between clinics’ EHR systems and ophthalmic diagnostic devices, so patient demographics can be sent to the instrument automatically.

Supporting diagnosis

Clinicians can access a patient’s earlier examination data alongside new results, which supports diagnostic decisions and cooperation between medical disciplines.

Flexible deployment

The latest version can run as part of the client’s extended medical ecosystem, or as a traditional on-premises solution for storing and analysing particularly sensitive medical findings.

The solution

The result is a scalable and flexible ophthalmic data management solution that supports eye-care professionals and institutions in their daily work. It is available as a desktop/office version for mid-sized practices and as an enterprise solution for hospitals and large clinic groups, with a monitoring dashboard covering all modules and services.

Technologies: Java · Spring Boot · JavaFX

Results

  • Simpler clinical workflows: diagnostic devices are connected, and earlier examination data is available when it is needed.
  • Paperless operation: a fully electronic workflow saves storage space, filing and printing costs.
  • Better-informed decisions: access to a patient’s history supports diagnostic decision-making.
